Wavelength Selection Using a Modified Camera to Improve Image-Based 3D Reconstruction of Heritage Objects

چکیده
Tools for image-based 3D-reconstruction are commonly used cultural heritage applications; however, wider usage has increased variability in the quality of output 3D models. Geometric variations between models acquired with differing methods make metric conservation applications such as condition monitoring and measuring change over time challenging. This article presents an investigation wavelength selection using a modified off-the-shelf DSLR camera bandpass filters to improve input image study wooden sculpture coyote turtle from Smithsonian American Art Museum. The large crack concern conservators, but its curved, dark shiny surface challenges dimensional monitoring. Selecting infrared wavelengths rather than visible light reconstruction images reduced specular reflections improved contrast resulting recording shape. 3D-reconstructions radiation produce better reconstructions those light. In this case reconstructed discrepancies ∼0.6 mm whilst ∼0.3 mm. Results suggest that reflected more forgiving flexible data dark, surfaces thus reliability comparability 3D-reconstruction.

متن کاملMinimal Camera Networks for 3D Image Based Modeling of Cultural Heritage Objects
3D modeling of cultural heritage objects like artifacts, statues and buildings is nowadays an important tool for virtual museums, preservation and restoration. In this paper, we introduce a method to automatically design a minimal imaging network for the 3D modeling of cultural heritage objects. This becomes important for reducing the image capture time and processing when documenting large and...
متن کاملAutomatic Reconstruction of 3D Objects using a Mobile Monoscopic Camera
A method for the automatic reconstruction of 3D objects from multiple camera views for 3D multimedia applications is presented. Conventional 3D reconstruction techniques use equipment that restrict the flexibility of the user. In order to increase this flexibility, the presented method is characterized by a simple measurement environment, that consists of a new calibration pattern placed below ...
متن کاملImage based 3D Reconstruction in Cultural Heritage Preservation
Documentation of the current state of an object is often the first crucial step in cultural heritage preservation. Especially for large scale objects as buildings this task becomes complex and time consuming. Hence, there is a growing interest in new, more efficient techniques, which ease the process and reduce the financial impact of surveying actions. In case of façade restoration, experts ne...
متن کاملUsing Bilateral Symmetry to Improve 3D Reconstruction from Image Sequences
In previous applications, bilateral symmetry of objects was used either as a descriptive feature in domains such as recognition and grasping, or as a way to reduce the complexity of structure from motion. In this paper we demonstrate how bilateral symmetry can be used to improve the accuracy in 3D reconstruction. The symmetry property is used to \symmetrize" data before and after reconstruction...
